Your Body Mass Index is calculated as follows:
1) Establish your weight in kilograms (kg). To convert from pounds (lbs) to kilograms (kg) simply divide by 2.2.
2) Establish your hegiht in metres (m). If required, convert inches to centimetres by multiplying by 2.54. Then convert centimetres (cm) into metres (m) by dividing by 100.
3) Having obtained weight in (kg) and height in (m), use the following equation to calculate BMI.
BMI = Weight (kg) / Height˛ (m)
When you have your BMI, use the following table to see your results:
Body Mass Index | Underweight | Healthy | Overweight | Obese |
Men | < 18.5 | 18.6 - 24.9 | 25.0 - 29.9 | > 30 |
Women | < 18.5 | 18.6 - 24.9 | 25.0 - 29.9 | > 30 |
It is important to be aware that BMI uses total body weight and does not discriminate between fat and lean body mass. Therefore, BMI should ideally be used in conjunction with other body composition tests.
