The heart is located in the thoracic cavity, below the sternum and between the lungs/ The heart rests on the diaphragm, positioned just off of centre. An average heart will beat 35 millions times a year, this is about 100,000 beats each day.
A persons’ age predicted heart rate max (HRmax) is equal to 220 beats per minute minus the person’s age in years. The heart rate max will decrease with age. Women tend to have a higher rate response to the same work rate as men.
Heart Rate
The average heart rate for a sedentary person is between 60 and 80 beats per minute, with the national average in the UK considered to be 72 beats per minute. The average heart rate for a trained person will see a reduction, but the heart rate will often rise at the thought of exercise and will rise along with the oxygen consumptions linearly with increasing exercise intensity.
