Monosaccharides tend to consist of 4 or 5 or, most commonly, 6 carbon molecules. These are generally found in a ring formation, the ring is made up of 1 oxygen atom and 5 carbon atoms. The remaining hydrogen, oxygen and carbon atoms are found above and/or below the ring.
